Rexroth proportional valves — including the 4WRA, 4WRZ, and 3DREP series — are built to handle demanding industrial and mobile hydraulic duty, but like any precision component they have predictable points of failure. Knowing where to look first can save significant diagnostic time before a valve ever reaches a repair bench.
Spool Sticking and Contamination
Proportional valves operate with tighter internal clearances than standard directional valves, which makes them more sensitive to particulate contamination in the hydraulic fluid. A spool that sticks intermittently, hesitates on direction changes, or fails to return fully to center is one of the most common complaints we see on 4WRA and 4WRZ series valves, and it’s frequently traced back to fluid cleanliness rather than a defective part.
Solenoid and Coil Wear
The proportional solenoids that drive spool position see constant electrical cycling, and over time the coil windings can degrade from heat or vibration. Symptoms include inconsistent spool positioning at a given command signal, reduced maximum stroke, or a solenoid that draws current but produces little to no mechanical movement — often mistaken for a wiring or controller fault.
Seal and O-Ring Degradation
External leakage around the valve body or end caps is usually a seal issue rather than a sign of internal damage, but left unaddressed it can introduce air into the system or lead to pressure loss under load. On 3DREP pressure reducing valves in particular, seal wear can also produce a slow pressure drift that’s easy to mistake for a calibration problem.
LVDT and Feedback Drift
Closed-loop 4WRA and 4WRZ valves depend on an LVDT to report spool position back to the amplifier. A drifting or failing LVDT produces symptoms that look electronic — instability, overshoot, or a valve that won’t hold a commanded position — even when the mechanical spool and solenoid are functioning normally. This is one of the more commonly misdiagnosed failure points because it mimics an amplifier problem.

Because these failure points can produce overlapping symptoms, an accurate repair starts with isolating whether the issue is mechanical, electrical, or in the feedback loop.
