Torque Motor and Flapper Wear
Both the BD15 and BD30 use a nozzle-flapper first stage to convert electrical command into mechanical spool motion. Contamination in the hydraulic fluid can erode the nozzle or score the flapper over time, producing null shift, sluggish response, or a valve that no longer centers correctly. This remains the most common failure point on both series and is almost always tied back to fluid cleanliness.
Spool and Sleeve Wear
On the second stage, erosion or silting at the spool-sleeve interface changes the valve’s metering characteristics, showing up as increased internal leakage, reduced gain, or a valve that drifts off a commanded position under load. Because the BD30 handles higher flow than the BD15, spool wear on the BD30 tends to show up first as reduced force output rather than outright sticking.
Feedback and Null Bias Drift
Both series rely on internal feedback to maintain accurate closed-loop control. A gradual shift in null bias — the valve no longer sitting at true center with zero command signal — is a common symptom of feedback wear or electrical drift, and it’s often mistaken for a mechanical spool problem when the root cause is actually in the feedback path.
