Proportional and servo valves both convert an electrical signal into precise, variable hydraulic flow or pressure, and from the outside they can look nearly identical. But the internal construction, tolerances, and intended application are different enough that using the wrong valve for the job — or repairing one to the wrong standard — can cost you performance and service life.
Control Precision and Response Time
Servo valves are built for high-bandwidth, closed-loop applications where response time is measured in milliseconds and positional accuracy is critical. Proportional valves trade some of that speed and precision for durability and cost efficiency, making them well suited to applications where control needs to be smooth and proportional to command, but not necessarily instantaneous.
Construction and Tolerances
A servo valve’s nozzle-flapper or jet-pipe first stage is built to extremely tight clearances, which is what enables its precision — and what makes it far more sensitive to contamination. Proportional valves typically use a direct-acting or pilot-operated spool design with looser tolerances and larger orifices, making them more tolerant of real-world fluid conditions and easier to service in the field.
Typical Applications
Servo valves are the standard in applications demanding tight positional or force control: flight simulators, injection molding, test stands, and precision motion control. Proportional valves dominate in mobile and industrial equipment such as cranes, presses, and material handling systems, where robust performance and cost per valve matter more than microsecond-level response.

The right choice usually comes down to how tight your positional tolerance needs to be and how clean your hydraulic system is or can realistically stay. Because the two valve types are built to different standards, they also require different repair approaches: a servo valve needs to be restored to its original tight-tolerance specification, while a proportional valve repair focuses on restoring reliable, repeatable proportional response.
